Swim With Buck

Radio is amusing…but there is NOTHING funny about water safety…and that is why WiLD 94.1 is partnering with High 5, Inc. to launch, “Swim with Buck,” so that WiLD’s beloved Buckwheat can learn to swim, too! Drowning is a leading cause of death for children in the United States; not only that, but nationally? 10 people die each day from unintentional drowning:

  • Drowning is responsible for more deaths among children ages one to four than any other cause except birth defects.
  • Among those 1-14, drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death behind motor vehicle crashes.
  • For every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency care for non-fatal submersion injuries.
  • Research shows 64% of African-American, 45% of Hispanic/Latino, and 40% of Caucasian children have little to no swimming ability.
  • African-American children ages 5 to 19 drown in swimming pools at rates 5.5 times higher than those of white children in the same age range.
